After an excess of music exams and Brandenburg concertos Phil escaped the classical scene. Influenced by the "Dunedin sound" he slipped into the indie world with some school mates, transferring from violin to the electric bass and joining the four-piece "Yorkie and the Bricklayer". A few years later, with a burgeoning interest in jazz harmony, Phil joined a jazz trio, "Float The Boat", with a regular spot at a local cafe.
A renewed focus on the bass has seen Phil explore his indie roots while also diving into genres such as soul, R&B, funk, latin and reggae. Recently he has had the privilege of recording with Jason Khaw on his recent Peace River album, and with The Blue Hotel for an upcoming indie/electronic album. He currently plays electric bass and viola, occasionally joining in the local Gypsy Djam.
